The fisheries sector contributes some 2 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product and employs in excess of 2,000 persons. Over the last 14 ¾ years the ULP government has been actively encouraging fisher folk to build up the industry through a series of financial incentives and practical supports, including the provision of low-cost loan funds to upgrade the fishing fleet. Further, the upgrade and modernisation of the Kingstown Fish Market and other Fisheries’ Centres have been beneficial to fisher folk and the industry. However, the Kingstown Fish Market and the Fisheries Centres require private sector investment and management to improve their operations.
The fishing industry is vital for nutrition, job and wealth creation. Accordingly, in its fourth term, the ULP administration will:
✔ Expedite efforts to attract the private sector management of, and investment in, the Kingstown Fish Market and the other Fisheries’ Centres;
✔ Provide further financial incentives for the upgrade of the fishing fleet;
✔ Ensure that further training is delivered to fisher folk in every aspect of the fishing industry;
✔ Encourage the development of an industry for the processing of fish and other marine products;
✔ Improve the standards in the industry to meet international regulatory standards, including those of the European Union;
✔ Strengthen further the institutional capacity of the Fisheries Department.
✔ Facilitate training of young people in the fish handling and preparation;
