Although the Grenadines (Northern and Southern) have not as yet accorded the ULP the honour of representing them in Parliament, the ULP government has embraced the Grenadines as the especial jewels of our nation and has accordingly implemented public sector projects galore in these our beautiful treasures.  Among the achievements/initiatives of the ULP government thus far in the Grenadines, are the following:

✔ Built a modern secondary school in Union Island;

✔ Built a modern primary school in Bequia;

✔ Improved markedly the access to, and quality of, early childhood, primary, secondary, post-secondary, and tertiary education, including the provision of universal access to secondary education and near-universal access to early childhood education;

✔ Built a learning resource centre in Union Island; a Marine Resource Center, a modern Police Station, a Modern Administrative Centre and other facilities in Canouan; a modern clinic and hospital upgrade in Bequia; a new Jetty and other facilities in Mayreau;

✔ Built a modern Jet Airport at Canouan;

✔ Rebuilt/upgraded the Fisheries Centres in Bequia and Canouan;

✔ Enhanced the health services in Bequia, Canouan, Union and Mayreau;

✔ Built an Electricity Plant in Mayreau;

✔ Built the wharf in Mayreau;

✔ Built a Coast Guard Base in Canouan;

✔ Built additional quality water-catchment facilities on Union Island and Bequia; the water project at Paget Farm is a pioneering one of great significance to the people of Bequia;

✔ Built the Hugh Mulzac Square in Clifton, Union Island;

✔ Repaired all the schools in the Grenadines;

✔ Established a Court House in Canouan;

✔ Established a Sustainable Livelihoods Project in the Tobago Cays and placed the Marine Park under sound management;

✔ Enhanced the system of garbage collection and disposal in every populated Grenadines island; the people in Bequia, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau do not pay for this service ___ it is free!

✔ Strengthened environmental protection of the fragile eco-systems of the Grenadines;

✔ Distributed several dozens of building lots in Bequia, Canouan, and Union Island for persons “native” to these islands;

✔ Enhanced the harbour at Port Elizabeth as part of the overall “Belmar Development Plan” for Bequia;

✔ Rehabilitated/repaired the Union Island Airport, and the JF Mitchell Airport on Bequia;

✔ Updated the Mustique Agreement to the improved advantage of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines;

✔ Established a partnership with the Mustique Charitable Trust to the benefit of the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines;

✔ Secured the return of 100 acres of magnificent beachfront land at Chatham Bay, Union Island, from the foreign owners; the Government paid roughly EC $600,000 for lands worth in excess of EC $100 million;

✔ Facilitated and supported in practical terms the inter-island ferry service (including special assistance for the Fast Ferry);

✔ Facilitated and supported in practical terms, inter-island air service;

✔ Worked closely with the investors on Canouan to ensure the resolution of the differences between the two major developers; thus, in both the “developed” north, and the marina real estate development project in the south of the island, the extensive construction activities have resumed. (The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines owns shares in the Glossy Bay Marina Company which is developing the project in the south of the island);

✔ Working closely with the developers in Canouan to open the magnificent Pink Sands Hotel shortly;

✔ Implemented a comprehensive development plan for Canouan, including public sector projects in concert with the Developers;

✔ Secured substantial foreign direct investment in hotel and tourism development in all the Grenadine Islands; tourism construction/expansion is on-going;

✔ Boosted domestic investment in all the Grenadine islands;

✔ Ensured that the state-owned National Properties lead the way in domestic real estate development in the Grenadines, especially Bequia.

In the ULP’s fourth term, we will build upon this impressive list of achievements by:

✔ Working closely with local and foreign investors in even more hotel/tourism development in each of the Grenadine islands where practicable.  Hotel and tourism development/expansion is slated for several sites in Bequia, Quatre Isle, Union Island, Mayreau, PSV and Palm Island amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars;

✔ Providing more housing lots at affordable prices to the “native” islanders in the Grenadines;

✔ Building a secondary school in Canouan;

✔ Improving further the quality of secondary education in Bequia, and Union Island;

✔ Building a Learning Resource Centre in Bequia;

✔ Renovating/upgrading further the Fisheries Centres in Bequia, Canouan and Union Island;

✔ Upgrading the delivery of health care on Mayreau;

✔ Strengthening environmental protection throughout the Grenadines;

✔ Renovating/rehabilitating the road network in the Grenadine Islands;

✔ Implementing the modern solid waste project in the Grenadines;

✔ Building a modern wharf facility in Canouan;

✔ Constructing a modern market facility in Canouan;

✔ Strengthening participatory democracy through effective Local Government in the Grenadine islands.
