Addressing Climate Change & Handling Natural Disasters

  • Reformed and Expanded the National Emergency Management Organization to plan for and orchestrate disaster response H Built NEMO Satellite Warehouses in Barrouallie, Bequia, Georgetown, Marriaqua Mayreau, Noel, Rose Hall, and Union Island, to deliver assistance in the immediate aftermath of a disaster 
  • Enacted a Contingencies Fund to set aside readily accessible money for a “rainy day” 
  • Constructed sea defence works at Georgetown, Sans Souci and Shipping Bay, and commenced construction of Sea Defence at Sandy Bay. All told, these works will cost over [$200 million] 
  • Negotiated two successive $54 million packages with the World Bank to provide immediate assistance in the aftermath of a natural disaster 
  • Mainstreamed climate resilient engineering in all infrastructure works, to ensure that everything built will be resistant to climate change and weather events 
  • Undertaken a massive home reconstruction and rehabilitation programme to ensure that Vincentians live in climate resilient homes 
  • Implemented the Climate-Public Investment Management Assessment (C-PIMA), in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, to improve the management of climate investments
